Associate Professor Manuel A. Báez has been at the Carleton University Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism since January of 2001. Previously, he taught in the United States at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City and Rhode Island School Design in Providence, RI. His work as an architect, artist and researcher draws inspiration from the generative potential of the forms, structures and integrative systems generated by elemental processes that exist throughout the natural environment …

His educational concerns, interests and objectives are focused on the development of teaching methods and procedures derived from the research. Báez has extensively exhibited and lectured on his work and research in various international conferences and institutions. The work has been funded by such agencies and institutions as the Canada Council for the Arts the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, Cranbrook Academy of Art and Carleton University.

In collaboration with Jean Le Mée, former Mechanical Engineering Department Chairman at The Cooper Union, the design of The Millennium Sphere project was a Finalist (Honorable Mention) in the New York Times Magazine Time Capsule Competition. This project was subsequently exhibited at The Museum of Natural History and The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.

In 2005, Báez was honoured with a Research Achievement Award from Carleton University. More recently, as a way of exploring possible collaborative projects, he has been invited to present his work at the Bath, U.K., offices of consulting engineers, Buro Happold (research division), landscape architects, Grant Associates and the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Bath. This has been made possible by a recent Carleton University Foundry Program Innovation Grant that has allowed for the proposal and presentation of a series of projects to possible collaborators and industry partners within the Ottawa community and beyond.

As a result of this, Báez has been invited to be a guest speaker at a TEDx event on the theme of Ideas Driving Innovation at Carleton University. Professor Báez received his B. Arch. Degree from The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art and his M. Arch. Degree from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He is a licensed architect in New York State.

Professor Maria DeRosa’s research examines a type of nucleic acid called ‘aptamers’ that can bind tightly to a specific molecule. ‘Aptamers’ come from the greek ‘aptus’ meaning to fit. She is using chemistry tools to understand how these pieces of DNA or RNA can fold into certain shapes that make pockets for these targets. This information can then be used to design useful devices out of these nucleic acids, like biosensors or smart therapeutics …

Given increasing concerns about infectious diseases and environmental contaminants, there is an urgent need to develop these kinds of innovative sensing tools for the rapid and accurate detection of these substances. For example, faster and more accurate biosensors could have an impact on medicine by allowing for earlier disease diagnosis and therapy. More sensitive biosensors could also help us protect our food and water supply by detecting contaminants, even when they are at very low levels.

After finishing her undergraduate work in chemistry at Carleton University, Dr. DeRosa was awarded the University’s most prestigious medal-the Governor General’s Silver Medal. She pursued her graduate studies at Carleton under the guidance of Prof. Robert Crutchley with whom she published several papers in top journals including the Journal of the American Chemical Society. In 1993, upon successful completion of her Ph.D., she was presented with a Senate Medal. She has received several scholarships including an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship that allowed her to do research at the California Institute of Technology from 2004-2005 with Prof. Jackie Barton, a world-leader in DNA sensor research. Her research during this time was published in the top journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA. In 2005, she joined the Chemistry Department at Carleton as an Assistant Professor. She was awarded the John Charles Polanyi Prize, a prize for promising new researchers, in 2006, and has also been a CFI Leaders Opportunity grant recipient.

– Siddhartha Buddha

At the time I obtained a license in June 2009 to host a TEDx event for Carleton University, I knew the task of organizing such as event was going to be no small exercise. As event host, the tasks involved are much more than logistics handling and finding cool speakers. I took to heart the role of “Curator” and challenged myself to create a positive experience for all those I can touch with such an event. For me, “curating” TEDxCarletonU involved four specific areas: event theme, external outreach, “community” engagement and student experience.

Event Theme

My first concern was to tie a theme that was unique to TEDxCarletonU while maintaining loyalty to the overarching TED philosophy of “ideas worth spreading”. Given my work at Carleton University to support the development of innovation arising from our research activities, I decided to focus on those researchers who were truly pushing the limits of their respective disciplines.

Good ideas were a good start but I believed it would be — as the Buddha quote states — that an idea put into action was more important than “just an idea”. Hence, I sought those researchers who had the vision and commitment to apply their ideas for real-world benefit. I also sought to find those researchers on campus who were relatively new to Carleton (and the Ottawa region) and give them a platform to share their innovative ideas.

External Outreach

An important dimension of TEDxCarletonU is the desire to “showcase” the innovative research that goes on at Carleton U to an external audience. The audience make-up of our first TEDxCarletonU event, as a result, will be over 80% external attendees. I deliberately sought to make the event an outreach of Carleton U into the broader Ottawa community. In keeping with this view, the event is being hosted off-campus at the fabulous Gladstone Theatre.

Community Engagement

For first-time organizers like myself, our TEDx attendance is limited to 100 people as per our license with TED. With so many TED aficionados in the Ottawa region, the issue of who can attend the TEDxCarletonU event represents the most daunting task of all. It was for this reason that I selected a “theme” to help identify prospective attendees. In keeping with our TEDxCarletonU theme of “Ideas Driving Innovation“, I thought to attract local “changemakers” who were equally passionate about ideas and, more importantly, were actively involved in making a difference in the Ottawa area. In a sense, my goal was to engage a diverse audience of community changemakers who understood and “practiced” our event theme.

Student Experience

Last but not least, I believe the TEDxCarletonU event should also engage our amazingly creative and talented students in all aspects of the event organization (social media, web design, public relations, photography, etc). I am very proud of the team of highly motivated students who have joined me in bringing TEDxCarletonU to life.
